Dopirak goes deep in Cubs' loss

Cubs at the plate: First baseman Brian Dopirak hit his first home run of the spring on an 0-1 count in the top of the fourth. Newly signed Juan Pierre went 1-for-2.

Giants at the plate: Lance Niekro hit a three-run home run with two outs in the sixth inning, giving him five RBIs on three hits for the game. Outfielder Daniel Ortmier went 2-for-4. Ray Durham and Steve Finley each had one hit.

Cubs on the mound: Starter Jerome Williams pitched two innings and allowed one run on three hits, with one walk in his Spring Training debut.

Giants on the mound: Starter Jason Schmidt made his Spring Training debut with two innings of shutout ball, allowing two hits and striking out one.

Cactus League records: Cubs 2-1; Giants 2-1

Up next: The Giants have two split-squad games Sunday, one against Team USA and the other against the full-squad Cubs in Mesa, Ariz. The Giants will start Matt Morris against Roger Clemens for Team USA and Kevin Correia against the Cubs' Rich Hill.
