Making his second start of the tournament, the 22-year-old right-hander gave up two hits and did not walk anyone. Archer, acquired from the Indians with two other Minor League pitchers for Mark DeRosa on Dec. 31, 2008, was named the Cubs' Minor League Pitcher of the Year for 2010.
This season, Archer combined to go 15-3 with a 2.34 ERA (37 earned runs in 142 1/3 innings) in 28 games between Class A Daytona and Double-A Tennessee. He struck out 149 in 142 1/3 innings and walked 65.
The U.S. team now is 9-0 in the tournament and has the No. 1 seed heading into Tuesday's semifinal round, where it will play the Dominican Republic. Team USA beat the Dominican team, 8-3, last week.
The U.S. squad also has qualified for the 2011 Pan American Games, tentatively scheduled for Guadalajara, Mexico, next October, as well as the 2011 IBAF Baseball World Cup.
