The Chicago Cubs today placed catcher Michael Barrett on the disabled list with an intrascrotal hematoma. In a corresponding roster move, the Cubs have recalled infielder/outfielder Buck Coats from Triple-A Iowa.
Barrett suffered the injury in the fifth inning of yesterday's game against the San Francisco Giants at Wrigley Field. The 29-year-old catcher is hitting .307 (115-for-375) with 16 home runs and 53 RBI in 107 games this season. His 53 RBI rank tied for fourth among National League backstops this season.
Coats, 24, begins his second stint with the Cubs as he went 0-for-3 in three pinch-hitting appearances with the Cubs from August 22-27. The Cubs' 18th round selection in the 2000 First-Year Player Draft, Coats has batted .282 (127-for-450) with 21 doubles, seven home runs and 51 RBI in 124 games with Iowa this season.
