Cubs to honor Santo with statue at Wrigley
Already, Ron Santo's place in Cubs history is indelible. From his 15-year big league career to his calls in the booth and his charitable endeavors, there's no doubt he will always be remembered as an all-time great.

On Saturday, the Cubs announced they're going to go the extra mile for Santo as he did for so many others.

Prior to a 7:05 p.m. CT start against the Nationals on Aug. 10, a statue in Santo's likeness -- just the fourth statue of its kind at Wrigley Field -- will be unveiled. The Cubs will also wear a special patch throughout the 2011 season commemorating Santo, who passed away on Dec. 3 at age 70.

"Ron Santo will always be remembered as an extraordinary player, as the ultimate Cub fan and for his tireless commitment towards juvenile diabetes research," Cubs chairman Tom Ricketts said. "On behalf of the Cubs' organization, we are proud to honor Ron Santo with a statue of his likeness at Wrigley Field, so that future generations can remember his remarkable legacy on and off the field."

Only Ernie Banks, Billy Williams and Harry Caray -- elite company -- currently have a statue at Wrigley. Located near the corner of Clark and Addison Street, Banks' statue was dedicated on March 31, 2008. Williams, whose statue is at the corner of Addison and Sheffield Avenue, had his statue dedicated on Sept. 7, 2010. Caray's statue is located at the corner of Sheffield and Waveland Avenue, and was re-dedicated on Sept. 1, 2010, after its first dedication on April 12, 1999.

Santo hosted the Ron Santo Walk to Cure Diabetes for 32 years, raising more than $40 million to support diabetes research, progress and continued hope for a cure. He became a Cubs broadcaster in 1990, 16 years after retiring as a player.
