Mariners at the plate: Center fielder Jeremy Reed had his first two hits of the Cactus League season, a two-run double during a four-run second inning, and a bunt single in the third. Mike Morse started in right field and doubled in the second inning, moved to third base in the sixth and singled in the eighth.

Cubs at the plate: Center fielder Felix Pie, a late addition to the lineup, went 3-for-5, scored a run and drove in a run. First baseman Mike Kinkade hit a two-run home run in the fourth inning, his first of the spring, and singled home a run in the seventh.

Mariners on the mound: Right-handed starter Miguel Batista retired the first five batters he faced and then walked two before getting the third out in his second and final inning.

Cubs on the mound: Right-hander Mark Prior lasted 1 1/3 innings in his first start of the spring, surrendering four hits and three runs. Reliever Kerry Wood worked one inning, retiring all three batters he faced.

Cactus League records: Mariners 0-5; Cubs 1-3.

Up next: The Mariners on Tuesday make their first trip to Surprise, facing the Texas Rangers. Left-hander Horacio Ramirez makes his first Cactus League start. The Cubs return to HoHoKam Park to play the Milwaukee Brewers with right-hander Jason Marquis making his first spring start.
