Padres at the plate: Kevin Kouzmanoff hit an RBI single and a two-run homer. Brian Giles tripled and scored on a sacrifice fly by Geoff Blum in the sixth. Jose Cruz Jr. added a two-run homer in the second.

Cubs at the plate: Derrek Lee hit a three-run homer in the first, his second this spring, and also doubled to lead off the third.

Padres on the mound: Tim Stauffer gave up three runs on three hits and one walk in one inning. Former Cub Greg Maddux was slated to pitch but he stayed behind in Peoria to start a Minor League game. Mike Thompson threw three scoreless innings, giving up two hits and one walk.

Cubs on the mound: Rich Hill gave up three runs on three hits over five innings while striking out four. The lefty has not walked a batter in 10 innings this spring. It was the longest outing by a Cubs starter.

Cactus League records: Padres 6-9; Cubs 8-8-1.

Up next: The Padres play host to the Chicago White Sox on Sunday in Peoria. David Wells will make his third spring start. The Cubs travel to Tempe Sunday to play the Angels. Carlos Zambrano will make his fourth spring start. So far, Zambrano has given up two earned runs on six hits and five walks over nine innings while striking out 12. John Lackey is scheduled to start for the Angels.
