Cubs drop wet one, but Prior excels

Padres 1, Cubs 0 (5 innings)
at Peoria, Ariz.
Thursday, March 22

Padres at the plate: In a game shortened by rain, the Padres got an RBI single by Mike Cameron in the first inning and very little else in the five-inning contest. Marcus Giles, Adrian Gonzalez, Josh Bard and Khalil Greene also had hits.

Cubs at the plate: The Cubs managed just three hits off San Diego starter Greg Maddux, including a double by Derrek Lee. Ryan Theriot and starting pitcher Mark Prior had the other two hits.

Padres on the mound: Maddux was sharp and efficient in his five innings, as he allowed just three hits. He didn't walk a batter in a stint that lasted 64 pitches. With those five scoreless innings, Maddux lowered his spring ERA to 1.80.

Cubs on the mound: Prior had his longest outing of the spring on Thursday, as he allowed one run on four hits in four innings. He had three strikeouts and two walks. Rich Hill followed with a scoreless fifth inning.

Cactus League records: Padres 10-10-1; Cubs 11-11-1.

Up next: The Padres will head to Phoenix on Friday to face the A's at 1:05 p.m. PT. Newcomer Justin Germano, claimed off waivers from Philadelphia recently, makes his Cactus League starting debut.

The Cubs are at home in Mesa for a 3:05 p.m. CT game with San Francisco. Carlos Zambrano is the scheduled starter for Chicago.
