Cubs Short Hops: Game 3

Cubs Short Hops: Game 3

CHICAGO -- The Cubs were swept from the playoffs after losing, 5-1, to the Diamondbacks on Saturday night.

In < 25 words ...
Rich Hill struggled, and the offense went 0-for-9 with runners in scoring position as the Cubs lost their third straight game to Arizona.

Frozen moment
It did not take long for the Diamondbacks to get to Hill, with leadoff man Chris Young sending Hill's first pitch of the game into the stands in left to give Arizona one of two first-inning runs.

Big number
4 -- The Cubs hit into four double plays Saturday, including three to end an inning. The offense also had leadoff runners on base in four of the first five innings, but only Mark DeRosa, who singled to lead off the fourth, came around to score.

Game balls

Jason Kendall

Kendall entered the game batting .355 (11-for-31) against Arizona's Livan Hernandez, and he went 1-for-4 with a single and the Cubs' lone RBI against the right-hander. The Diamondbacks had three stolen bases with Kendall behind the plate, but none of the runners scored.

Mark DeRosa

DeRosa went 2-for-4 and scored the Cubs' only run on Kendall's groundout in the fourth. He also reached base on shortstop Stephen Drew's error in the second.

Bob Howry

Howry entered in the eighth inning with the Cubs down, 4-1, and struck out the side to keep the Cubs within three runs.

Sense of October
The Cubs' hitters were patient at the plate in the fifth against Hernandez, who walked the bases loaded. In what was perhaps the team's biggest at-bat of the season, DeRosa worked the count to 3-1 before grounding into an inning-ending double play.

Lines of the Game

Comment: Lee singled in each of his first two at-bats after going 2-for-8 with one walk in the first two games.

Rich Hill
3 IP, 3 R, 6 H, 2 BB, 3 Ks
Comment: Hill struggled from the get-go, and he left after walking catcher Miguel Montero and giving up a single to Hernandez to lead off the fourth.
