at Mesa, Ariz.
Friday, March 7
Mariners at the plate:
Yuniesky Betancourt hit a two-run homer in the first. Ichiro Suzuki was 0-for-2, and is 0-for-10 this spring.
Cubs at the plate:
Derrek Lee hit a RBI double in the first. The Cubs scored four runs in the fourth, including a pair on pinch-hitter Daryle Ward's two-run homer. Aramis Ramirez, in his first spring game, went 0-for-2.
Mariners on the mound:
Carlos Silva gave up six runs on seven hits and two walks over 3 1/3 innings. This was Silva's second spring outing; he'd given up one hit over two innings in his other start.
Cubs on the mound:
Ted Lilly walked the first batter, then served up Betancourt's homer before settling down and retiring nine in row. He struck out four over three innings.
Cactus League records:
Mariners 4-4; Cubs 3-6.
Cubs up next:
The Cubs have a split squad on Saturday, sending half the team to Phoenix to play the Oakland Athletics while the other half stays at HoHoKam Park to play host to the Arizona Diamondbacks. Sean Marshall was slated to pitch against the A's while Jon Lieber will start against the D-Backs. Also, Alfonso Soriano was expected in the Cubs lineup for the first time this spring, and will likely play in the home game.
