Padres at the plate: Marshall McDougall hit his first spring homer with one out in the fifth off Sean Marshall. McDougall also walked with two outs in the seventh, advanced on a throwing error by shortstop Ryan Theriot and scored on Callix Crabbe's single.

Cubs at the plate: Pinch-hitter Alex Cintron hit a two-out RBI single in the ninth for the game-winner. Sam Fuld hit a sacrifice fly in the fourth and scored on Theriot's single with one out in the seventh. Kosuke Fukudome scored a run and, in the field, robbed Jody Gerut of possible extra bases with a spinning catch at the wall to end the third.

Padres on the mound: Greg Maddux was slated to pitch four innings, but was pulled after giving up two hits over two scoreless innings. He suffered a minor contusion on his left thigh after getting hit by a line drive by Derrek Lee in the first. Wil Ledezma gave up two hits over four innings.

Cubs on the mound: Jason Marquis gave up two hits and two walks over four scoreless innings, striking out two. Marshall gave up two runs on four hits over three innings.

Cactus League records: Padres 8-6; Cubs 6-10.

Cubs up next: The Cubs play host to the Angels on Friday at HoHoKam Park. Ryan Dempster, battling for a spot in the rotation, will make his fourth spring start. It will be Day 2 of the Cubs' lineup experiment as well, with Alfonso Soriano expected to hit second rather than leadoff if he's in the lineup. The game will be televised on Comcast Sports Net.

Padres up next: The Padres will play under the lights on Friday. San Diego plays host to the Milwaukee Brewers in Peoria, sending lefty Randy Wolf to the mound. Meanwhile, the other half of the Padres are in Beijing to play exhibition games against the Dodgers, and their first game will be Friday. Channel 4 San Diego is broadcasting both games from China.
