Piniella reflects on Yankee Stadium

NEW YORK -- As the Cubs' charter flight flew into New York on Sunday night, it went right over Yankee Stadium as it was hosting its final game.

"Whenever I think of the big leagues, I will always think of Yankee Stadium," outfielder Alfonso Soriano said. "That's my first place."

Soriano started in the Major Leagues in 1999 with the Yankees. Lou Piniella has even more history with Yankee Stadium, having played and managed there. He said his goodbyes during the All-Star Game, which was held there.

"They put on a grand finale that was spectacular," Piniella said of Sunday's festivities. "It was special."

Seeing some of the old-timers on the field, such as Yogi Berra and Whitey Ford, gave Piniella goosebumps. But it's time to move on.

"I think people will forget [the old ballpark], because the new Yankee Stadium will be a wonderful, wonderful stadium," he said. "They're going across the street, and they'll pick up next year where they left off this year."
