CHICAGO - The Chicago Cubs today recalled right-handed pitchers Alberto Cabrera and Chris Volstad from Triple-A Iowa. Right-handed pitcher Casey Coleman was optioned to Triple-A.
Both Cabrera, who joins the first roster of his major league career wearing uniform number 55, and Volstad will be available for the Cubs this afternoon against the Pittsburgh Pirates at Wrigley Field.
Cabrera, 23, has combined to go 4-1 with five saves and a 3.11 ERA (19 ER/55.0 IP) in 36 appearances between Double-A Tennessee and Iowa this season. The 6-foot-4, 210-pound Cabrera originally signed with the Cubs as a non-drafted free agent on July 7, 2005. He pitched a full season in Single-A Peoria in 2009 before quickly advancing through the system to Double-A in 2010 and Triple-A by the end of 2011. Cabrera is a native of Las Matas De Farfan, Dominican Republic.
Volstad, 25, returns to the Cubs for his third stint this season. He was a member of Chicago's starting rotation to start the season before being optioned to Iowa on May 18. Volstad returned to the club to make a spot start on July 3 in Atlanta. Overall this season, Volstad is 0-7 with a 7.94 ERA (40 ER/45.1 IP) in nine starts with the Cubs.
With Iowa, Volstad is 3-5 with a 5.17 ERA (41 ER/71.1 IP) in 12 starts. The 6-foot-8, 230-pound righthander was acquired from the Miami Marlins on January 5 for right-handed pitcher Carlos Zambrano.
