Cubs undecided on Harden's option

CHICAGO -- Pitcher Rich Harden will be examined either Tuesday or Wednesday before the Cubs make a decision on whether to pick up his $7 million option.

Harden, who received a cortisone shot in his right shoulder in early September, was 5-1 with a 1.77 ERA in 12 starts with the Cubs, who acquired him on July 8 from the Oakland Athletics. While with the A's, Harden was 5-1 with a 2.34 ERA in 13 starts.

Harden was given extra time between starts to keep his arm fresh, and he appeared in three games in the last month. The Cubs were aware of his limitations when they traded for him.

The Cubs could decline the option and make Harden arbitration-eligible. Either way, he is expected back with Chicago in 2009.

General manager Jim Hendry will go over the team's offseason game plan when he meets with scouts and other members of the organization during the club's meetings on Oct. 19 in Mesa, Ariz.
