CHICAGO -- The Cubs added a potential impact arm in Friday's eighth round of the First-Year Player Draft when they selected college left-hander Sam Wilson with the 228th overall pick.
Wilson, out of Lamar Community College in Lamar, Colo., was 11-2 with a 1.33 ERA in 19 appearances for the Runnin' Lopes. He started six times this season, completing each game.
The 6-foot-1 and 205-pound southpaw fanned 109 batters in 87 2/3 innings, walking 43. His fastball sits around 90 mph but has touched 94, while his curveball and changeup have the potential to be Major League average.
A two-way player in college, Wilson was selected in the 20th round of the 2010 Draft by the Rangers before going to New Mexico. He landed at Lamar after academic issues forced him to redshirt and ultimately transfer.
