Cubs left-handed pitcher Travis Wood Named to N.L. All-Star team

Chicago Cubs left-handed pitcher Travis Wood was today named to the 2013 National League All-Star team. Wood has earned the first All-Star selection of his major league career.

Wood will represent the Cubs at the 84th Major League All-Star Game Tuesday, July 16 at New York's Citi Field.

The 26-year-old Wood entered play on Saturday leading all of baseball with 16 quality starts en route to a 5-6 record and a 2.69 ERA (33 ER/110.1 IP) in 17 starts. Wood has allowed two earned runs or less in 12 starts while limiting opponents to a .192 batting average, the third-lowest mark in the majors. He has also limited opposing batters to a .554 OPS, the fourth lowest mark in the majors.

Wood began the 2013 campaign with nine-consecutive quality starts, becoming the first Cubs pitcher to accomplish the feat since Mordecai Brown tossed 11-straight to begin the 1908 season.

The lefthander is the first Cubs pitcher to be named to the All-Star team since fellow southpaw Ted Lilly in 2009. Wood is only the third Cubs left-handed starting pitcher to make the All-Star team in the last 50 seasons, joining Lilly and Dick Ellsworth (1964).

Wood was named to the All-Star team by National League Manager Bruce Bochy.
