DENVER -- The last time Travis Wood faced the Rockies last Wednesday at Wrigley Field, he set career highs in pitches (119) and strikeouts (11). But his pitch count got out of control as he threw 82 pitches through four innings.

On Tuesday, Wood was much more efficient, needing 74 pitches through six and posting his 10th quality start. But he did not get a decision in the Cubs' 6-5, 12-inning win over the Rockies. Wood was sitting on the couch in the visitor's clubhouse when Javier Baez hit his game-winning home run in the 12th.

Cubs manager Rick Renteria said he did not pull Wood because of the over-work from his previous outing, but because he wanted a hitter in the seventh with the bases loaded and one out. Pinch-hitter Chris Valaika delivered a sacrifice fly to give the Cubs a 4-3 lead at that time.

"They brought Valaika in and he did his job and they scored a run, so I can't complain," said Wood, who is batting .262 this season. "I was able to get some quick outs and could've gone deep in the ballgame."
